Smokeless Cigarettes
A smokeless cigarette works by heating tobacco to the
point where it vaporizes, but does not burn. They have been produced
by different manufacturers at different times, but have never really
become popular. Often they look just like a regular cigarette, but they
require a different lighting process and produce much less or no smoke
at all. On most brands, a small piece of charcoal has to be heated up
with a lighter, once it gets hot enough the cigarette can be smoked.
There is no ash or smoke in smokeless cigarettes, the charcoal allows
for vapor to be released instead of smoke. This is claimed as an improvement
in air quality around smokers, but carcinogens are still present so
the debate continues. Because they are marketed as “safer”
the American Cancer Society has called for their removal from the market
place. Their argument is that the perceived safety is not true, there
is less tar and smoke but that could lead to a false sense of safety
as there are still harmful particles emitted into the lungs and air.
Other smokeless cigarettes use electricity to create the heat needed
to vaporize tobacco. They are often shaped to look like regular cigarettes
or even a pen, but have a heating element and a special filter that
contains the tobacco blend. The blend is mixed with glycol so it can
be vaporized easier, and is often flavored to give it a satisfying taste
comparable to smoking. These are not safe either, but it is a less damaging
way of ingesting nicotine.
