Roll Your Own Cigarettes
One way to save money is by learning how to roll your
own cigarettes. Tobacco can be purchased at smoke and cigar shops, and
along with a paper can be easily rolled into a cigarette and smoked.
The unrolled tobacco is generally sold by the ounce, but larger quantities
can also be purchased to save money. Depending on the shop, there is
often a large selection of different types of tobaccos of various qualities
and flavors.
Because of the ability to choose what tobaccos are preferred when you
roll your own cigarettes, individual blends can be fashioned. It is
much easier to see what is going into the cigarette as well, many pre-made
cigarettes contain additives or blends with lower quality tobacco. Filters
can be added during the rolling process as well, making them very similar
to “prefabs”.
The major difference in pre-manufactured cigarettes and roll your own
cigarettes are the quality of tobacco. Unrolled tobacco is either of
a higher quality than the tobacco that goes into cigarettes, or it is
of a much lower quality. Lower quality tobacco is often reconstituted
from the shavings and stems of a regular batch of tobacco for cigarettes.
The shavings, clippings and stems are ground down to a powder, mixed
with water to make a paste and then allowed to dry in sheets. The sheets
are then cut in a similar way to tobacco leaves to give it a natural
appearance. High quality tobacco is made from the best leaves only,
and allowed to cure correctly before cutting.
