Online Cigarettes
The ability to purchase online cigarettes is a relatively
new development in the world of smoking. It allows cigarettes to be
sent through the mail from state to state or even other countries. Because
of the ease of setting up a website and online store, the legality of
these websites is under debate. Countries with lower taxes and lax policing
can often set up these stores and offer huge discounts compared with
local prices.
The legality of online cigarette purchases comes into question when
the carton is shipped without the proper taxes or labeling applied.
With an unlabeled package, customs officials cannot properly tax the
pack, and unfortunately for smokers in the United States and many other
countries, an untaxed pack is illegal to own. To keep them legal, cigarettes
sales have to be reported and re-taxed by the local authorities, which
can make them even more expensive since they have been taxed at least
three times, from the cigarettes origin, then at its destination and
then taxed again with sales tax. By the time a cigarette gets to the
smoker, 80% of the cost goes to the government.
When ordering online cigarettes, check with the retailer as well as
with the local authorities. It is often easier and cheaper to purchase
them at a local smoke shop. Each state and country has different laws
and taxes pertaining to tobacco products, and many foreign suppliers
are not required to adhere to another countries law’s or taxes,
which can cause confusion about the legality of the product purchased.
